Dr. Erin Hill has been an academic specialist in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University since 2015, with responsibilities as the Cover Crop Specialist and the Herbicide/Weed Diagnostician in Diagnostic Services. Dr. Hill previously served as a research assistant with the weed science group in the same department from 2006-2015. Dr. Hill completed her Ph.D. in Crop and Soil Science at MSU (2014) focusing on how cover crops impact nutrient cycling and weed pressure in organic dry bean systems. She earned a M.S. in Horticulture (2006), also from MSU, exploring the impacts of competition and allelopathy of hairy vetch and cowpea cover crops on weed communities in pickling cucumber and a B.S. in Plant Biology from the University of Michigan (2003). Erin has been a member of the Midwest Cover Crop Council since the inaugural meeting in (2006) and has served as the web administrator since the launch of MCCC.msu.edu (2008). Dr. Hill’s cover crop research and outreach foci include: innovative management strategies to maximize biomass, determination of synergistic ratios of species in mixtures, soil health impacts for particular commodities and whole systems, and variety trials. As a member of the MSU Diagnostic Services team Erin handles and assists in cases involving: herbicide resistance, herbicide injury, abiotic injury or nutrient deficiency, and plant identification.
